Dear Friend,                  

I have always been fascinated with  successful people. As early as my late teens, I was reading and listening to tapes. The bug really never left me.   I remember starting out in sales and it was a tough go.  Friends and family would  ask me “ So, did you sell anything” I hated those words.

 The truth was I sold a lot. I sold my furniture my car … Then one day the sales manger came out on a call with me and  I watched in awe as he masterfully  closed the sale on the first call.. After we left the clients,  I sheepishly asked him, "How did you know he was going to buy?"

"I didn’t , that’s why I asked him" he said.   I reflected back on what I was doing and saying while in front of the client and realized I never asked for the sale. In fact, I avoided the topic like the plague. It was too awkward to confront the client with, I thought. 

The next week I promised myself  that I would ask no matter how awkward it was.  What do you think happened. We’ll, I didn’t  break any records but I made 2 sales that week and I was hooked for life. 

Afterwards, my manager left a book on my desk  ( I guess he felt I wasn’t a complete waste of time) with a big note in dark black ink that said  “ YOU NEED TO READ THIS!” 
 

I looked at the title and to be quite honest, I though he was kidding.  What the heck is Biscuits ,Fleas & Pump handles and who is Zig Ziglar?  I persisted and began reading the book. I read it cover to cover, non Stop. The most important lesson I  discovered from that book was that  in order to be successful, I had to do what successful people do. It turned out to be a pivotal point in my life and career.

Reading and listening to the very best at their craft has contributed greatly to much of the success that I had and continue to enjoy. Many of my favorite books I’ve read  over 10 times. I always seem to get something out of it each and every time.
 

I found that  as your focus changes, something that had little or no significance the very first time you read it now resonates .   Sometimes it’s a maturation process and  information that seemed  unimportant  now has a much greater significance the 2^nd, 3^rd or 4^th time you read it.

The focus of the books I read changed with my career and objectives  but I always sought out the people that were the leaders  in their area of expertise. I also read and heard a lot of garbage along the way and continue to see plenty of it out there today.

What can books and tapes do? Simple.  They can present new information and proven  methods  that will allow you to make new decisions and changes that will alter your direction. It’s our nature to want things to stay the same. It’s comfortable and familiar.

It can be your worst enemy.  The hardest part of making changes is getting past that feeling of discomfort. However,  once you’ve enjoyed the successes from stepping out of the box and  trying something different , change becomes a welcome necessity for your future success.
 

Looking back at my life thus far in business,  I can honestly say that  what I enjoyed most was  helping and providing guidance to  managers, employees and sales reps.   As executive Vice President of ITN Corporation, I  helped  build a team of dedicated Managers, Sales/Marketing  and  Support Staff.

We started  with just  two of us in a tiny 500SQ ft office. We experienced tremendous growth and in a 3 year period, surpassing 20 Million in Sales Annually, employing over 100 Staff spanning the country. 

Many are doing very well for themselves today.  I know I was a bit overboard when it came to  my views and opinions  with self development material.  But I realized  that if I was passive rather than passionate,  the chances of them catching fire were significantly diminished.
