Why Email, Instant Messaging and the Phone
Put You at a Significant Disadvantage
I say this because what I'm about to share with you is
Scientifically Proven and has had astounding results to
back it up.
The one condition however is that this applies to your
face to face encounters.
Although you can glean some sense of what others
are conveying through how they say it on the phone,
it's also the #1 modality for communicating lies. It's
true! People lie in approximately 37% of phone
conversations
Email and Instant Messaging is the weakest mode
for conveying a message and although that may
seem obvious, what is surprising is that people are
less likely to tell a lie.
That's understandable when you consider 2 key
points.
1. Recordability: There is a record of the interaction
2.
Synchrony: The extra time to respond when
using email makes it a lesser likely modality for
lying. People tend to lie more frequently when
they have to respond in real time.
The amount of time you spend where you are completely
focused on the person you are interacting with is key.
This is time you spend without the distraction of
taking cell phone calls, plucking away on your Blackberry,
listening to your mp3, Ipod, ect.
I'm talking about the time you spend when you're not
multitasking and your focus is on the person you are
connecting with.
Without co-presence ( when you are in the same
room with the person you are interacting with) and
focus, you will never be able to accurately read others
or convey your message effectively to others.
Why? It's simple. from our head to our toes, we
convey subtle messages that reveal our true
inner feelings, beliefs, moods etc...
We can't help it. Our subconscious controls these
movements and gestures that for the most part, we are
completely unaware we are even doing.
Each gesture , movement and expression reveals
more and more about us. You just have to know
how to tune in and interpret what the signals mean.
Once you can do this effectively, you are empowered
with a skill that less than 1% of people on the planet
have. How valuable is this?
I like to use the poker game analogy. It is the
equivalent of playing a game of poker where you get
to see what everyone has in their hand but they can't
see your cards.
It gives you that much of an edge over everyone else.
It's really an unfair advantage!
Most of those that seem to outperform everyone
else all possess this secret skill. Whether it's the top
salesman, the guy/gal who seems to get all the dates,
or the happy go lucky person that everybody likes,
respects and admires..
